THE MOST INTERESTING ITEM I'VE FOUND on Google Trends is New York Times versus blogs. Using a variety of keywords, blogs beat the New York Times. Over time, the lead is growing.

This isn't a perfect, apples-to-apples comparision. The lines for 'blog' includes queries for non-news blogs -- and the lines for the Times includes queries about the Times (such as Jayson Blair and Judith Miller) rather than for stories or topics.

Still, this would strongly suggest that online demand is higher for blogs than for the Times. Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be a dip associated with TimesSelect.

NOTE: In spite of what Andrew Sullivan says, I don't think the Times is necessarily doomed. For one thing, the Google Trends graph doesn't show offline demand. It also doesn't count people who don't use Google to find Times articles because they go directly to the Times' website. Still, I'm surprised by how poorly the times fared versus blogs.
